National Seminar on Maritime Border Resource Management

Center for Political Studies-Indonesian Institute of Sciences (P2P-LIPI)

Extracting maritime resources in the border area is a challenging task. Conflicting situation between states may arise from overlap of territorial claims and competition on particular resources. Such condition is a very common scenario for Indonesia. With the vision of Global Maritime Fulcrum, Indonesia eagers to maximize the economic benefits from its maritime resources. However, Indonesia still has several unfinished maritime border disputes that might become obstacle in realizing its vision. Several maritime countries, such as Japan, also share similar issues. Indonesia and Japan can share their knowledge and experiences on how to solve this issue. This seminar is aiming to seek alternatives in managing maritime resources in the border area, such as fishery and energy.  It will highlight the need of a comprehensive cooperation initiative among parties to manage shared resources, involving multilevel actors of state, private, and local people.
